PALETTE KNIFE PAINTING
objective: to learn the technique of palette knife painting, to "loosen up," and to experiment with textural application of paint

ATMOSPHERIC PERSPECTIVE
objective: to translate the visual effects of atmospheric perspective (decreasing value contrast and detail, cooler colors) in deep spaces

COLOR & VALUE PAINTING
objective: to understand the relationship between color and value through direct observation of a still life; to use color without mixing with white or black

REFLECTIVE SURFACES
objective: to see and translate reflective surface qualities, including distinct color and value shapes

RELATIVE COLOR
objective: to observe the subtle color shifts affected by reflected light and surrounding colors

SURREAL LANDSCAPE
objective: to create an imagined landscape, influenced by a collage aesthetic and the art of Surrealism

CROSS-CONTOUR & VALUE STILL LIFE
objective: to understand the use of cross-contour (directional) lines to describe surface direction; to build up line to indicate shadow; to eliminate outlines in observational drawing

PAPER SCULPTURE 
objective: to create a 3-dimensional sculpture out of one piece of 18" x 24" paper; to light the sculpture successfully; to experiment with composition; to learn the fundamentals of drawing with charcoal

REFLECTIVE WATER DRAWINGS
objective: to see and translate reflective surface properties; to experiment with white and black charcoal on gray paper to achieve a full range of values; to experiment with mark-making

INK WASH PERSPECTIVE
objective: to understand linear perspective through tools of observation studied in class; to experiment with the medium of ink wash in creating a full range of values

SURREAL SPACE

objective: to create an imagined space using both linear and atmospheric perspective; to work from collaged/photographic source material; to bring something personal to the drawing

EXPRESSIVE SELF-PORTRAITS
objective: to create a self portrait that expresses some inner or outward emotion; to explore a sense of self; to learn the structure of the human head; to observe cross-directional lighting
